About Nicaragua

Nicaragua is located in the heart of Central America. Called the land of Lakes and Volcanoes, it is a country of beautiful coastlines, lush mountains, and colorful flatlands. It is home to six million people known from their hospitality, humor, and endurance.

Nicaragua won it's independence from Spain in 1821 and established itself as an independent republic in 1838. During the 150 years that followed, the country endured corrupt governments, natural disasters, and civil wars. Nicaragua's history includes tales of the hero Augusto Sandino, of a US invasion, a brutal four decade long dictatorship by the Somoza Family, an earthquake that leveled the city, and then an overthrow of the dictatorship by the Sandanista Revolution in 1979.

Since 1990 Nicaragua has experienced peace and it is now considered the safest country in Central America.
